Grain Collection Centre and Mill

Cereal collection centre

This collection centre is one of the largest in Switzerland. Once the grain has been delivered by farmers, it is sorted, dried if necessary, and then stored in the various silos. It is then transported by lorry and train to various mills and oil mills across the country. Some of it is processed directly at the artisanal mill in Echallens.
Landi Gros-de-Vaud, the agricultural and milling co-operative based in Echallens, owns both the grain collection centre and the mill.

Artisanal mill in Gros-de-Vaud

Gros-de-Vaud is often nicknamed the ‘Breadbasket of Switzerland’. Whilst this name may not be characterised by the usual modesty, it is true that cereal cultivation is very widespread there. Its climate and deep soils are particularly well-suited to arable farming. Agriculture in Gros-de-Vaud remains a major and highly active economic force in the region. The artisanal Moulin d’Echallens supplies the region’s leading bakeries. It aims to uphold its status in a town that is home to the Maison du Blé et du Pain, as well as having hosted the 1978, 1998, 2008 and 2018 editions of the Fête du Blé et du Pain!

As the saying goes: “Echallens without a mill is like a good meal without bread!”

Guided tours of the Moulin d’Echallens are available for groups (maximum 12 people) and by appointment by telephone (021 881 19 81).
